Delaunay, Sonia

Delaunay, Sonia
(1885-1979)
Born Sonia Turk into a Jewish family in the Ukraine, she studied art in Germany and Paris. She married painter Robert Delaunay in 1910 and went on to become a printmaker, artist, and dress designer who embodied the fashion movement of the 1920s. Along with her contemporary Madeleine Vionnet, she was known for creating new ways of thinking about women's identity, the body, and newfound freedoms in women's fashion. She also collaborated with designers Coco Chanel and Jeanne Lanvin. In 1925, Delaunay featured her fashion designs at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. She is known for her expressive use of color and for her Sorbonne lecture on the influence of painting on clothing. She is also credited with introducing the then-novel idea of prêt-à-porter clothing.
